History
It is interesting to recall that Agulu Anglican community hosted the third Session of the first Synod in May 1989 under the Episcopacy of the late Right Reverend MSC Anikwenwa, the then Bishop of Anglican Diocese of Awka during the reign of His Royal Highness, Igwe Emmanuel Ejidike. The town also hosted the 3rd session of the 8th Synod in May 2010 under the Archiepiscopacy of the late Most Reverend Maxwell S.C Anikwenwa.
Agulu Anglican Community, the six Anglican Parishes, the youth organizations of the various parishes, the Boys and Girls Brigade, Mothers Union and Fathers fellowship will roll out their drums to welcome Archbishop Ibezim on arrival for the Synod. It is expected that notable Agulu indigenes, captains of industry and politicians will come out to support the Archbishop during the launching of funds for the completion of some Diocesan projects and investments.
Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area needs little or no introduction because of the socio-political, economic and educational viability of its people. The town is also richly endowed spiritually in the sense that it is still the highest producer of men in the Holy Order both in the Anglican and Roman Catholic Missions.
Christianity came to Agulu in 1914 when a team from the Church Missionary Society (CMS) came from Ozalla, Onitsha, surveyed and founded the spot we now call Saint Peter’s Parsonage, Nwagu-Agulu opposite Girls High School, Agulu. That seed has today grown to birth six parishes and two Archdeaconry headquarters- Agulu Archdeaconry and the Archdeaconry on the Lake.
The Synod is expected to attract very important personalities from all walks of life including the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the just concluded 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, CON who is an indigene of Agulu.
The host Archdeacon of Agulu Archdeaconry, Ven. Chamberlain Ofonakara and his ON THE LAKE counterpart, Ven. Silas Ike, the Chairman Local Organizing Committee, Sir. Emma Ibeneme, the Synod Planning Committee members and the entire Agulu Anglican Community have assured that they would leave no stone unturned to ensure a hitch-free synod.
The entire people of Agulu heartily welcome His Grace, Most Reverend Alexander Chibuzo Ibezim Phd, and his wife, Martha, all the Diocesan officials and the entire delegates and wish them a peaceful and fruitful deliberations in Agulu.
